Say the format first.

A clear ask still wanders when the shape stays in your head. Name the output format in the prompt.

A clear AI ask can still wander when you never put the output format in the AI prompt. The model invents a shape. You wanted five bullets. You get a pep talk in paragraphs.

Prompt Fluency is communicating so the model does not have to guess. Format is not polish. Format is part of the job. "Write a plan" is not the same job as "give me five bullets with one owner each."

Try this ask:

"Write a plan for the community garden spring clean-up."

You get a warm essay. History of the garden. A paragraph on teamwork. Tips for gloves. It sounds fine. You cannot paste it into the group text. You needed a list you can hand to three people at 8am.

Same break shows up everywhere.

"Make a notice for the laundry room about the broken dryer."

"Draft the pickup window text for the PTA bake sale."

"Write the class cancel note for Saturday yoga."

Each ask names a job. None of them name the shape. So the model picks a shape that feels complete. Long. Soft. Full of extras. You needed the form that fits the channel.

Put the format in the prompt. Plain English. Early. Before the nice wording.

"Write a plan for the community garden spring clean-up. Format: five bullets. Each bullet has the task, the owner first name, and the time window. No intro paragraph."

"Make a notice for the laundry room about the broken dryer on floor 2. Format: three short lines for a paper taped to the door. Line 1: what's broken. Line 2: what to use instead. Line 3: who to text. No apology essay."

"Draft the pickup window text for the PTA bake sale. Format: one SMS under 160 characters. Include window hours and the side door. No emojis. No soft pitch for donations."

"Write the class cancel note for Saturday 9am yoga. Format: email subject plus three sentences. Subject must start with CANCELLED. Body: date, makeup option, and studio door code reminder. No wellness pep talk."

That format line is not you being fussy. It is you closing the biggest open guess in the prompt. Words without a shape still force the model to invent a container. Invented containers are why you keep rewriting answers that already have the right facts.

I am not asking for a design brief. Name the container. Bullets. Table with three columns. Two-sentence SMS. Subject line plus body. A checklist with checkboxes. If you keep converting the answer into a different shape after every run, that shape belonged in the first prompt.

A quick check before you hit send:

Format vs "keep it organized"

  • "Keep it organized" still lets the model invent the container
  • "Five bullets, task + owner + time" is a container the model can hit
  • If you always paste the answer into a spreadsheet afterward, ask for the columns up front
  • If two good answers still look nothing alike on the page, your format line was missing or fuzzy

When the answer comes back smart and still the wrong shape, do not ask it to "clean it up." Name the format. Put that in the next prompt. Ask again.

You're not being difficult. You're removing the need to guess. That's Applied Intelligence Mastery in practice: say the format first, so the model stops inventing a container you have to rebuild by hand.
